The Gold Fields of Western
Australia
If you are looking for a uniquely
Australian experience you must consider visiting the Gold Fields of Western
Australia. The ‘Goldfields’ is a region of
outback Australia that owes its existence to the Goldrush of the late 1880’s and as well as offering a view of some
of the most spectacular scenery in this country, the region is also steeped in history and heritage and this lives
on in many of the townships that still prosper from the production of Gold.
The Gold Fields are dotted
with a series of townships that all have something different to offer. Kalgoorlie
W.A, sits at the heart of the Goldfields and can be a good
place to start your tour of discovery. Things to do in Kalgoorlie include a visit to Australia’s largest open cut mine, the
Super Pit and to the Mining Hall of Fame, where you
can try your luck at panning for gold and learn more about the history of the
Goldfields and the Goldrush era.
Other settlements along the
Goldrush trail include Cue which is known for its National Trust buildings, and
Leonora, Leinster and
Laverton which form a triangle worthy of exploration. You will also find ghost-towns along the way including the Big
Bell Ghost Town.

For those looking for
inspiration try this suggested route; Starting in Kalgoorlie make
your way to Coolgardie, Leonora, Laverton and Menzies. This route can also accommodate visits to the ghost town of Gwalia which is home to a
historic precinct andLakeBallard where you can see the Inside Australia
sculptures.
The Goldfields region offers a view of Australia that cannot be experienced anywhere else. The townships, the architecture, the native flora and fauna, the Aboriginal art and the
starry skies are just some of the enchanting things you will encounter here. If possible plan to camp under the stars for at least one night in the Gold Fields; this
will be an experience you never forget as will your whole trip through the Gold Fields of Western Australia.
